‘Lost Tudor garden’ revealed by Luftwaffe spy pictures from Second World War

A photograph taken by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War has helped unearth what is thought to be the lost Tudor design of a historic garden, the National Trust said today. The picture shows the land surrounding Lyveden New Bield in Northamptonshire, including an arrangement of ten concentric circles measuring 120 metres across, which could have formed a labyrinth – a popular garden feature of the time. National Trusts experts also believe the photograph, taken by Nazi aircraft flying over Britain in 1944, shows the last remains of an Elizabethan fruit garden.

The discovery has led to the garden being upgraded by English Heritage to the top Grade I listing, putting it on a par with great gardens such as Stourhead and Studley Royal. The image sheds light on one of the oldest surviving gardens in the country, which the trust said has been shrouded in mystery since it was begun by Sir Thomas Tresham more than 400 years ago.

The photograph is part of a series at the United States National Archive at Baltimore in Maryland and was discovered by National Trust gardens and parks curator Chris Gallagher while he was conducting research.We checked the database and found the photo existed but when we ordered up the image it revealed far more than we ever expected,’ he said. Not only did it expose the remnants of the original circular design – set within what Sir Thomas Tresham, who created the garden, then called his ‘moated orchard’ – you can also make out the vestiges of a regular array of planting holes, which we have taken to be the last remains of an Elizabethan fruit garden.’ Lyveden’s property manager Mark Bradshaw described the find as ‘probably one of the most important garden discoveries of recent times’. We’re still not exactly clear what these circles represent, but it’s amazing that the outline can be clearly made out in an aerial photograph taken almost 350 years after the garden was created,’ he said.

The garden was made by Sir Thomas Tresham but, along with the house, remained incomplete after his death in 1605. In the same year, his son Francis was implicated in the Gunpowder Plot, and afterwards a large collection of Tresham’s correspondence was hidden away at the family’s principal home Rushton Hall amid fears of further persecution, the National Trust said. The papers, which were discovered in 1821 and deposited in the British Library, include detailed plans for the garden. Mr Bradshaw said: ‘Some of the letters refer to 400 raspberries and roses to be planted within Tresham’s circular borders, which suggest these are the same circles that appear in the aerial photo. ‘A number of interpretations of this layout are possible, including that of a labyrinth, which was a popular feature of gardens of the 15th and 16th centuries. Labyrinths were often symbolic and it is likely that the plants within the ‘circular borders’ were themselves emblematic of religious or regal qualities.’ To give a sense of how the Lyveden garden may have looked when it was created, the National Trust has established a temporary labyrinth, which people would have used for contemplative walks along the long winding path, by mowing a pattern into the grass.

With a complex and fascinating personality, Picasso had, however, bouts of prolongued bad humour, be it on account of his family problems or dissatisfaction with his work. During those times, he was unbearable – nothing was ever good enough! – which could explain his short-lasting relashionships, especially with women. However, he also showed a generous and tolerant side towards other artists and creative people, in general; he respected their work and tried not to intrude upon them. So, when someone wanted to photograph him, he would obediently follow every instruction, as if he was amazed at the frenzy of tripods, cameras and projectors that surrounded him. Numerous pictures of the Spanish painter were taken using this method, by photographers such as Robert Capa, Cartier-Bresson, Yosuf Karsh, David Seymour, Robert Doisneau and Man-Ray, and, although they’re very good, they show more of the photographer’s personality than Picasso’s. This, however, was not Edward Quinn’s approach. Edward Quinn started out as a musician. During WWII he became a RAF pilot and, once the war was over, he continued to fly civil airplanes. During the 1950s, he lived in Côte d’Azur, which, at the time, was already the place of leisure of countless international celebrities. So, he decided that it might be a good idea to become a photographer… In 1951, during one of his assignments, he met Picasso. In the first photographs he took of the painter, he let him work freely, with no artificial poses. Picasso felt at ease with the photographer and focused on his work, forgetting he was being photographed. And thus, for over 20 years, Quinn entered the painter’s private sphere, capturing the man behind the artist – his house, women, children, friends, pets. He was one of the few privileged enough to do so and he was able to gather the most amazing set of pictures of the painter known to date. Picasso, on the other hand, never asked him to see his portraits; he knew that, inspite of the journalist’s interest in him as an “object”, there was a code of etics taken into account. That’s why they became friends.

Ice Age animated movie has became popular all around the world but it’s truly audience is in Russia since Russia is known by its very cold winters.

Cold weather and lot of snow and ice is very nice opportunity for ice-sculptors to create some interesting sculptures. Creating Ice Age characters from ice sounds like pretty good idea.

You are watching at photos from an event which was held this winter in Moscow where a lot of ice-sculptors attended and made some wonderful sculptures of Ice Age characters. This has became pretty popular amongst Russians who liked the idea. The most interesting part for me personaly are aquariums made from ice which are pretty realistic and unusually colorful.

I would say that there is a little bit true in those theories about defective waves and similar but it is probably not so big deal so you have to wear foil hat.

But, having an foil hut could be considerable option, so, you can sleep in peace. Here you are watching an impressive foil hut which is not only effective but also luxury. Also, some scientists say that foil can be used as Diabetes Treatment for early stage. I don’t want to talk about the level of the parody that is present in the mind of the creator of this hut but I can responsibly claim that he has some taste for interior designs

Footprints Of Dinosaurs In Bolivia

Dinosaur tracks have been found on a 70-degree rockface in Bolivia. It was a lakeside when the dinosaurs roamed here and around 5000 tracks can be found. From studying the track marks, it is found that 330 species have walked here. In one of the pictures, you can also compare the size of a man’s foot with the huge dinosaur footprint beside it. The clarity of the tracks and their consition is surprisingly good considering they walked here 68 million years ago.

The rockface in the pictures is called Cal Orko by the locals and was discovered recently in 1994, stretching 1.5 km. in length. It is the largest and the most important tracksite but is under constant danger of crumpling. Although $30 millions is being spent on protecting the site that goes upto 150 meters high, by the Bolivian authorities, a part of it crumpled this February destroying about 300 tracks.
